Being Human
Expectations are very high for men in all areas of our lives—health, wealth, love and work. It’s really not possible to do it all—all the time—because we’re only human. What happens when we don’t meet our own high standards, or those of others?
- Do we criticize ourselves in an overly harsh way?
- Do we become our own worst enemy, demanding more and more from ourselves?
- Do we get into conflict with those around us?
- Do we act in regrettable ways—working or drinking too much—but can’t seem to step out of it?
- Are we running ourselves down by our efforts to get it right?
Maybe there is a way to deal with all the expectations in a more constructive and supportive manner? Maybe we can actually thrive in the midst of constant challenges?
Mindfulness and self-compassion are not necessarily qualities that men are taught in childhood. However, these are essentials skills for men to live happy, effective lives. Some men are naturally mindful and self-compassionate. Fortunately, anyone can become more mindful and self-compassionate with specialized training.
Self-Compassion
Self-compassion—treating oneself with the same kindness and respect as we would treat a good friend—is a powerful inner resource. Burgeoning research shows that self-compassion is strongly associated with reduced stress and enhanced wellbeing, and a wide range of other positive factors such as improved relationships; better physical health; stronger immune functioning; healthy lifestyle habits like diet and exercise; decreased anxiety, depression and substance use; enhanced emotional resilience and coping ability; and wisdom.
Self-Compassion for Men
Of course, self-compassion is as important for men as it is for women. Although commonly associated with care and comfort, self-compassion also helps everyone to motivate themselves to succeed in tough situations and find the courage to challenge injustice and protect ourselves and others from harm. Furthermore, self-compassion is an effective way to calm the nervous system when things go wrong and to break out of the cycle of cycle of shame and blame.
This course is the full MSC program. We will also address unique challenges that men face in modern times, such as the need to be strong, courageous and invulnerable as well as open-hearted, collaborative and sympathetic.
